With only one tweak, I was able to significantly improve the photo app on my iPhone.

My favorite feature in the new images app is iOS 18’s secret method for sorting your images such that the most recent one you’ve saved will appear at the bottom of the grid, regardless of when it was shot.

A redesigned Photos app was part of the September release of iOS 18, which put additional albums and collections front and center. If you swiped down, you could still see a grid containing all of your pictures. However, I didn’t really like these adjustments. Rather, my major priority is to arrange photographs according to the date they were uploaded to photographs.

Previously, by default, if I saved a photo that someone emailed me, it would be arranged with all of my other images in chronological order, according to the time the shot was taken. Therefore, if I saved a picture from last summer that a family member gave me, it would be lost in the sea of other pictures.

Sometimes I would give up trying to locate it after scrolling through hundreds of images and movies. However, I discovered a Sort by Recently Added setting in Photos that allows you to arrange your images according to the date they were saved to your device rather than the date they were taken.

To ensure that you never lose a picture, follow these steps to arrange your images according to the date they were saved to images.

How to arrange your pictures in the Apple Photos app according to when they were taken
1. Unlock images.
2. To have the grid fill your whole screen, scroll up into your photographs.
3. In the lower-left corner of your screen, tap the up and down arrows.
4. Select Sort by Newly Added.

After selecting that choice, your images could move to reflect the new setting. Even if your most recent saved picture was from your wedding years ago, it will now appear at the bottom of the grid regardless of when it was shot.
